Preventive Care & Vaccinations
Routine Equine Veterinary Care
Semi-annual checkups allow us to monitor the overall health and wellness of your horse. It is beneficial for us to see your horses when they are healthy and sound as a way to set a baseline for their overall health.
When you see a horse every day, it becomes difficult to notice subtle changes in weight, demeanor, or appearance that could indicate a problem. Routine evaluations give us the opportunity to catch signs of illness and disease early, provide proactive treatment and offer dietary recommendations.
Along with physical examinations, equine preventive care should also include vaccinations, and parasite control, and dental exams. By maintaining a consistent preventive health care schedule involving each of these, you help to ensure your horse remains healthy and able to perform at the level you are striving for.
Coggins Testing For Equine Infectious Anemia
The Coggins test screens for Equine Infectious Anemia EIA. We recommend annual testing for all horses to help prevent further spread of this disease. A negative test within twelve months is required any time your horse travels between states or takes part in shows or competitions.
Vaccination Schedule For Horses
Core vaccinations are essential for protecting the health of all horses. Your veterinarian will evaluate your horse's lifestyle and environment, then recommend the best risk based vaccination schedule to meet their specific needs.
-
Core Vaccines
Core vaccines are important for all horses. The diseases and illnesses that they protect against are common and potentially fatal to horses.
In the spring, we recommend immunization for:
- Eastern and Western Encephalitis
- West Nile Virus
- Tetanus
In the fall, we recommend immunizations for the following diseases:
- Rabies
-
Risk Based Vaccines
The following vaccinations are administered if your horse's lifestyle increases their risk of contracting the disease:
- Equine influenza virus
- Herpesvirus
- Strangles
- Equine viral arteritis
- Potomac horse fever
- Rhinopneumonitis
Deworming for Horses
Deworming practices vary depending on the environment and stocking density on your farm. In general, we advocate at least semi-annual anthelmintic treatment. Performing fecal egg counts is an ideal way to determine if intestinal parasites are a problem for your horses and help guide treatment protocols.
