Regenerative Therapy
Restore Soundness with Equine Regenerative Therapy
From joint or tendon injuries to inflammation, arthritis, and other health conditions, horses can develop a variety of health problems that require treatment.
Our team at Great Lakes Equine offers therapeutic treatments designed to help manage pain, speed healing, and reduce inflammation and scar tissue that may impede recovery.
If your equine partner is showing signs of lameness or is just generally not performing at their best, we will work with you and to determine which orthobiotic treatment or injection can provide the greatest possible recovery and comfort for your horse.
Equine Therapeutic Services
At Great Lakes Equine, we offer the following regenerative treatments and injections to help your horse recover from injury and live comfortably with arthritis and other inflammatory diseases:
-
Pro-Stride
This regenerative therapy offers a safe, convenient, drug-free alternative to traditional steroid joint injections to treat arthritis and joint pain in your equine athlete.
Pro-Stride (Autologous conditioned plasma) is made from your horse’s own blood which is processed in a 2-step system, producing a super concentrated solution filled with anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
Pro-Stride is a great option for:
- Young performance horses with inflamed or sore joints. Pro-Stride will help protect the joints from future arthritis without the use of steroids.
- Older horses that may be at higher risk due to metabolic diseases such as Cushing’s or Equine Metabolic Syndrome.
- Actively competing horses, as there is no withdrawal time for USEF and FEI competition.
-
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is an easy way to help accelerate a horse's healing process.
Examples of conditions this therapy can help with:
- Ligament, tendon, and muscle strains
- Splints
- Bucked shins
- Scar tissue
- Neck, back, and joint pain
- Ringbone
-
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
PRP injections are used to treat injuries by encouraging the natural regeneration process without subjecting the patient to steroid injections which carry some additional risk of complications and side effects.
We have learned that when activated in the body, platelets release healing proteins called growth factors. There are many growth factors with varying responsibilities. Cumulatively, however, they accelerate tissue and wound healing. When injected into inflamed or injured tissue, we are able to deliver a powerful cocktail of growth factors that can dramatically enhance tissue recovery.
-
RenoVo
RenoVo represents an advancement in regenerative veterinary medicine utilizing amniotic tissue. Amniotic tissue possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fibrotic and extracellular matrix proteins which are important for tissue healing.
This product can be a fantastic alternative to other autologous therapies because it is available without delays such as culturing or harvesting which is required for other regenerative therapies.
-
IRAP Injections
Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP) injections are used to treat equine injuries and encourage the regeneration of injured or degenerative tissue.
Your horse's blood will be drawn and incubated overnight and then centrifuged to collect serum. The serum produced is then re-injected back into the patient, be it a joint, a chronically sore navicular area, or an inflamed tendon sheath, working to decrease the inflammatory process and thus helping to improve comfort and slow degenerative processes.
-
Noltrex
Noltrex offers an innovative option for the treatment and management of joint issues and lameness in horses.
While other therapies focus on treating the symptoms related to joint issues, Noltrex focuses on addressing and managing the underlying cause.
This is the only intra-articular injection that provides a layer of lubrication on the cartilage surface. Some of the other key benefits of Noltrex are:
- Long-lasting effects
- Provides a synthetic cushion for joints
- Non-pharmaceutical
- Long-term treatment option
- Safe for horses with metabolic disorders
-
Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is an effective way to treat degenerative arthritis in a horse’s back and the cervical vertebrae. It is an injection that helps by reversing the physiology of degenerative conditions to stop pain.
This treatment can help with the following medical conditions:
- Sacroiliac pain
- Kissing spine
- Arthritis of the back and neck
- One-sided neck stiffness
- Generalized back discomfort
This treatment can be enhanced when combined with veterinary spinal manipulation.
Health Issues That Equine Therapies Can Address
Regenerative therapy from our equine vets can be an excellent way to help soothe discomfort and promote healing in horses suffering from a wide range of medical issues.
These issues can include musculoskeletal disorders, joint disease and injury and general lameness. More specifically, we may recommend regenerative treatments to help heal splints, reduce the development of scar tissue and provide relief for horses with ringbone.
Regenerative Treatment Starts with a Lameness Evaluation
If your horse is lame, there is a good chance that regenerative therapeutic options may be able to help. The best way to know for sure is to perform a thorough lameness evaluation to pin-point the cause of your horse's discomfort.
